I have become fascinated by dragons lately, they have been drawing me in, catching my eye, creating a presence. It’s funny that it is now the Chinese year of the dragon. Is this coincidence?
I had just, on a whim, posted a story on Facebook, an image I created which was inspired by some words that dropped in overnight last year: “Hitching my ride to a different type of dragon.” I added some music, called Dragonfly, which I thought was appropriate. I had no purpose in doing this, other than it all kind of flowed and I found myself having pressed ‘post’.
Shortly afterwards I was gifted a crystal dragon’s head, what a lovely surprise! He’s beautiful. A brief thought passed through my mind, he needed to be named. I left it at that.
I went on to have a quick browse on Facebook - dragon pictures again, lol. I just love Dragon Muse Artworks. A post caught my eye, a beautiful picture along with a little background story. A Romani girl and her dragon. I was immediately drawn to it, fascinated by her enigmatic expression, that musing look, gazing beyond, a little day dreamy, I recognise that. The little back story gave her name, Aishe. Gosh, that's similar to what I believe is my soul name, only one letter different! Oh how interesting, whats the dragon’s name then? I took note. Guaril. An unusual name, I couldn’t pronounce it, I knew immediately that could be my dragon's name.
According to the story, Guaril means ‘champion’ or ‘victor’, and I found that it is pronounced Gua-ril. I practiced saying Guaril to familiarise my mouth with the required movements. Then I burst out laughing. Of course, it needs to have a dragon accent! Gu as in Gucci, ar with an emphasis on the ‘r’ more like a rolling throaty roar, and il, sounds as it looks. So there we have it Guar-il. How hilarious!
I haven’t double checked with the dragon yet, so if he objects, then, of course I’ll change it. And wait for him to tell me what his preference is. But I have a feeling this may be his preference, or perhaps he doesn’t mind what he is called.
I mused about naming things, and I have done this with a number of crystals. I wait for a name to pop into my head, and even if they don’t make sense to me, that is the given name. I have also named other things, like a long walking stick I have, I can’t quite remember it now being several years ago, but it was something like, Pherofus. As a bit of a joke I bought a beautiful handmade besom broom, perhaps a bit of witchy heritage coming out, and it wanted to be called Megarth. It adds magic to the day when you say I’m taking Pherofus for a walk or Megarth for a sweep!
Will this become a growing trend? One that is resurfacing to expand our connections to the other realms maybe?
The naming of what are thought of as inanimate objects is probably well known when it comes to King Arthur’s Excalibur. Less in the spotlight, he also had a dagger named Carnwennan, a shield named Pridwen, or Prydwen (which has also been attributed to his ship or boat), and Rhongomiant his spear. Leaving aside the debate as to which name is the correct name for which object, (there are variations), this does highlight an ancient trait.
So what comes first? Does the object come with its own name? Picked up from the ether and ‘heard’ by the person associated with it? Or is it a co-creation? A match of energy packets that meet and translate into the name?
I enjoy waiting to hear when a name surfaces, this is especially enjoyable if it is unfamiliar to me, this confirms I’ve not just thought it up, and then I go do some research to find out more about it.
For this crystal dragon, the connection was made for me via someone else’s artwork, discovering it was like following a little trail of prompts until I reached the destination, the prize, the name revealed.
The actual crystal was not identified, it has a pleasing green/grey marble effect. I asked and they thought it to be an agate, well, they were 70% sure it was. Ooh, my word antennas twitched - agate, a gate, how interesting is that? Is this a dragon's gate? A link to the dragon realms? Oh what fun to be had musing with a dragon!
